Mohsena Begum, the daughter of the late Syed Zafar Abbas, was born in Sultanpur, U.P., India. She had an excellent education in Islamic sciences, although private, as was the custom in the early part of this century among Indian Muslims. After she was married to Mr. Zaheer Naqvi of Mustafabad, U.P., and her children grew older, she developed her skills in writing verse and public speaking. She wrote devotional poetry and became a successful Zakirah (female speaker who addresses religious gatherings in the solemn month of Muharram) in Lucknow, where she lived until 1967. She moved to Karachi and was accepted in the society of devotees of Imam Husayn there, equally well. She died of a cardiac arrest while preparing to recite a Majlis on the 8th of Rabi al Awwal (2nd April, 1974). She was survived by her husband, three sons and three daughters who established this foundation to propagate and enhance the work of the community and religious services that she began in her lifetime. Three of these siblings have since passed away, including the Founder of MMF, Syed-Mohsin Naquvi. Their children continue to run the activities of the foundation based on the teachings of their grandmother.
